These nine offices do the full range of consular work, including passports, ID cards and the fingerprints every passport needs.
The 41 honorary consulates
Honorary consuls cover the ground the career missions cannot reach. None of them issues visas or ID cards, and 8 of the 41 can take a passport application, which is often a far shorter journey.
Other cities
There is no German consulate in most American cities. These have a page of their own: which office covers them, how far away it is and what can be settled without going.
