Two honorary consuls sit inside this district and both take pressure off the Copley Place office: Portland in Maine, and New Haven in Connecticut. Neither of them issues passports, so a passport application still means a trip to Boston.

Boston serves New England, with one piece missing. Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont are all here, and so is most of Connecticut, but Fairfield County belongs to New York. If you live in Stamford, Bridgeport, Norwalk or Danbury, this is not your consulate. The office is in Copley Place, in the Back Bay.

What this office does

Everything that needs a consular officer in a room happens at one of nine offices, and this is one of them.

  • German passports, including the fingerprints every application needs
  • German ID cards, which honorary consuls cannot issue
  • Name declarations, registrations of birth and of marriage
  • Certification of signatures and certified copies
  • Forwarding citizenship files to the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne

Incomplete applications are refused at the counter, so the document list matters as much as the date.

What you can settle without travelling

Before you plan the trip, check whether your matter needs the office at all.

  • Get a document apostilled: for a US document it is the Secretary of State of the issuing state; no German mission can do it
  • Send in a life certificate for your pension: there is a free digital route with a QR code, and a bank or a police station can sign the paper one
  • Apply for a visa you may not need: a US passport gets you 90 days in Germany without one
