What this office can and cannot do

The office is honorary, which changes what it can do rather than how helpful it is.

This office cannot take passport applications. The Federal Foreign Office states it plainly, so a new German passport means going to Chicago.

Visas are never issued by an honorary office, and neither are ID cards. Those two always mean a career mission.

There are no published counter hours. Email or call first and agree a time before travelling.

What you can settle without travelling

A good part of German paperwork never touches a consulate.

  • Apply for a visa you may not need: a US passport gets you 90 days in Germany without one
