Five honorary consuls report to Atlanta, in Birmingham, Charleston, Charlotte, Columbia and Raleigh, plus Jackson and Nashville nearby. Only Charlotte is listed as able to take a passport application. For the others, the Federal Foreign Office does not say either way, which is not the same as saying no: call before you drive.

Atlanta covers six states across the Southeast: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The office is in the Marquis Two Tower, in Peachtree Center downtown. It is the mission with the densest network of honorary consuls behind it, which matters because the district stretches from the Mississippi Delta to the Outer Banks.

What this office does

Passports, ID cards, name declarations and citizenship files are all handled here, which is true of only nine offices in the country.

  • German passports, including the fingerprints every application needs
  • German ID cards, which honorary consuls cannot issue
  • Name declarations, registrations of birth and of marriage
  • Certification of signatures and certified copies
  • Forwarding citizenship files to the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne

Nothing here is done on a walk-in basis. The appointment is the fixed point and the rest of the trip plans around it.

What you can settle without travelling

A good part of German paperwork never touches a consulate.

  • Send in a life certificate for your pension: there is a free digital route with a QR code, and a bank or a police station can sign the paper one
  • Apply for a visa you may not need: a US passport gets you 90 days in Germany without one
  • Find out whether you are German at all: the dates of your family's emigration decide it, and you can work that out from your own records before anyone books an appointment
