The German ID card from the United States

German ID card
Only the embassy and the eight consulates general issue German ID cards. No honorary consul can, and it needs an appointment separate from any passport appointment.

The German ID card is not a substitute for a passport when you live outside the European Union, and the missions say so. It is useful for travel within Europe and for the online identification function, and most people abroad hold both.

What it costs and how long it lasts

For applicants under 24 the card costs 70.60 € and is valid for six years.

From 24 it is 89.00 € and valid for ten.

Activating the online identification function for the first time, or again after turning 16, costs 12.00 €.

Who can apply, and where

Children can hold an ID card from birth, with the application made by a parent or guardian. Applicants under 16 must be accompanied by both parents or their guardians.

Applications are taken only at the embassy and the eight consulates general. Honorary consuls, including the ones that take passport applications, cannot take these.

A passport and an ID card are two appointments. Booking one does not cover the other.

Why you probably still want the passport

Living outside the EU, the ID card will not get you far as a travel document. The missions recommend holding a valid passport as well.

The card's value here is the eID function and European travel, rather than identification in the United States.

If you are choosing between the two on a single trip to the consulate, the passport is the one that does more.

Book two appointments. The systems treat them as separate applications and staff cannot merge them on the day.
Can my honorary consul take the ID card application?
No. Some honorary consuls take passport applications, but ID cards are limited to the embassy and the consulates general.
My child is 14
Both parents or the guardians need to attend with the child. That is a firm requirement under 16.
I only travel within Europe
Then the card covers you for travel, though you will still want a passport for identification outside the EU and for re-entry to the United States.
 Outside the EU the ID card is not a travel document. Hold a valid passport as well.
