What this office can and cannot do

An honorary consulate is not a smaller version of a consulate general. It is a different kind of office with a narrower brief.

This office can take passport applications, including the fingerprints. That is not true of most honorary consuls, and it saves the trip to Los Angeles.

Applying through an honorary consul adds 105.00 € to the passport fee, and the office may charge its own forwarding cost. Payment is in cash, in US dollars.

No honorary consul issues visas or German ID cards. Those are limited to the embassy and the eight consulates general.

It is worth starting here even for things that end up elsewhere: the office knows the local situation.

How far your consulate general is

What you can settle without travelling

Before you plan the trip, check whether your matter needs the office at all.

Track a passport that is already in progress: it is printed in Berlin and the six to eight weeks are set there, not at the counter that took your application
Order copies of German civil records for a citizenship file: those come from German municipalities by post, and they are the slowest part of any descent case
Order a German birth, marriage or death certificate: the registry office of the German town where it happened issues it, and most of them take an online or postal request
