Order copies of German civil records for a citizenship file: those come from German municipalities by post, and they are the slowest part of any descent case
Order a German birth, marriage or death certificate: the registry office of the German town where it happened issues it, and most of them take an online or postal request

Buffalo can take passport applications, which matters a great deal from Rochester or Syracuse: Manhattan is a 370 mile drive from Buffalo and the honorary office is not.
