What this office can and cannot do

Honorary consuls are appointed to cover ground the career missions cannot reach. They are not open counters.

This office can take passport applications, including the fingerprints. That is not true of most honorary consuls, and it saves the trip to Los Angeles.

Applying through an honorary consul adds 105.00 € to the passport fee, and the office may charge its own forwarding cost. Payment is in cash, in US dollars.

Visas and German ID cards are outside every honorary consul's powers, here and everywhere else in the country.

Because the post is held alongside a main profession, do not expect someone to answer at any hour. Arrange the visit in advance.

How far your consulate general is

Los Angeles is 1028 miles away, around 18 h 2 min at posted speed limits. Nobody makes that trip twice for the same file, so get the document list confirmed before you set off.

What you can settle without travelling

Some of what people book an appointment for does not need one.

  • Apply for a visa you may not need: a US passport gets you 90 days in Germany without one
  • Find out whether you are German at all: the dates of your family's emigration decide it, and you can work that out from your own records before anyone books an appointment
  • Track a passport that is already in progress: it is printed in Berlin and the six to eight weeks are set there, not at the counter that took your application
