What you can settle without travelling
A good share of German paperwork is settled by post or online.
- Get a document apostilled: for a US document it is the Secretary of State of the issuing state; no German mission can do it
- Send in a life certificate for your pension: there is a free digital route with a QR code, and a bank or a police station can sign the paper one
- Apply for a visa you may not need: a US passport gets you 90 days in Germany without one
Tampa is listed as not able to process passport applications, and the ministry does not say for Orlando. From the Panhandle, Miami is a 650 mile drive, so confirm before you set off.
