The passport hotline runs Thursday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and the visa hotline Monday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Outside those windows the way in is the appointment system, not the phone.

Houston covers Texas and the four states that ring it to the north and east: Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The office is in the Post Oak tower, in Uptown. Its two published hotlines are narrow and worth writing down, because they are the only hours when a person answers about passports or visas.

What this office does

The full range of consular work is done here: this is a career mission, not an honorary office.

  • German passports, including the fingerprints every application needs
  • German ID cards, which honorary consuls cannot issue
  • Name declarations, registrations of birth and of marriage
  • Certification of signatures and certified copies
  • Forwarding citizenship files to the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne

Every service runs on the appointment system, and passport slots are the first to disappear.

What you can settle without travelling

Several of the most searched German procedures are handled entirely somewhere else.

  • Find out whether you are German at all: the dates of your family's emigration decide it, and you can work that out from your own records before anyone books an appointment
  • Track a passport that is already in progress: it is printed in Berlin and the six to eight weeks are set there, not at the counter that took your application
  • Order copies of German civil records for a citizenship file: those come from German municipalities by post, and they are the slowest part of any descent case
